Yes, your suggested code does almost exactly what I wanted (I wanted %dead, not %alive, but that's a trivial change). In fact, I had already 'resorted to' a 'data step cheat' (broadly similar to yours) - but was hoping that Peter (who then suggested yourself!) might be able to tell me that TABULATE had the intrinsic ability to do it - but it seems not!
