Hi:
Since it is a slow day, I will come out of my cave for a few moments to
second Phil's call for additional information that would make the
"trading list" most useful. I can see this list getting large, as others
in the past, and rather than issuing it to the Conch_L list periodically
maybe someone should be thinking about a web site for it (if I have not
missed plans to do this already). Then announcements can be made
periodically as to the current size, etc. Anyway, as the list gets
bigger it does become a burden on some of our list members (i.e.,
overseas) that pay for their service by the minute.
Also, since there are so many "new" people on Conch_L, maybe they are not
aware that this is not the first time this has been done, that is, there
are other lists of people interested in shells and trading that existing,
each with it's own flavor and twist:
<paraindent><param>out</param>
Vita Marina Site - with 801 (and counting) people providing their
interests and in many cases whether they would like to trade (can access
through "Additional Information Resources" on COA site).
Tom Rice's "The Directory of Conchologists/Malacologists" which has just
published his 4th edition. I am a little behind, but the 2nd addition
had over 1500 entries. He uses a sign up sheet to find out your
interests and then codes the information in the text. This reference has
been the "standard" for many years having been passed through several
individuals who published it as a work of "love" for the conchology
community over the years. The address is on the COA site under
"Additional Information Resources"; then "Selected Sources of Information
on Mollusks" then "Catalog of Shell Prices"
Molluscs.Net has classified ads for people to trade and sell material.
I am sure there are some others that I have missed and will be pointed
out by others. The important point is that there are several lists to
review, each with it's unique approach and each containing people who are
not on other lists!
