I spent yesterday birding between Augusta and Savannah, around Millen. I've birded very little in this part of the state, so I planned a visit to parts of Screven, Burke and Jenkins Cos.

I started in Burke Co., outside of Sardis on GA24, headed to northwestern Screven Co. near Hilltonia, then to Magnolia State Park/Bo-Ginn Aquarium, and ended at Di-Lane Plantation WMA in Burke Co.

The highlights are as follows:

Burke Co. (Rollins Farm pond off of GA24) ----------------------------------------- Solitary Sandpiper - 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 300+

Screven Co. (Hilltonia) ----------------------- American Redstart - 1 (female) Ovenbird - 1 Prothonotary Warbler - pair

Jenkins Co. (pond at GA21/GA23 intersection) ------------------------------------------- Common Moorhen - 3 fledglings

Magnolia State Park/Bo-Ginn Aquarium ------------------------------------ Little Blue Heron - 36 White Ibis - 12 Bank Swallow - 1 (photographed)

Burke Co. (pond off of Herndon Rd. near Jenkins Co. line) --------------------------------------------------------- Common Moorhen - 5 (includes 4 fledglings)

Di-Lane Plantation WMA ---------------------- Mississippi Kite - 1 Painted Bunting - 4 (including a female stuffing worms down a fledgling cowbird)

I ended up with 80 species total in all of the areas that I visited, so it was a pretty good day.

Take care. -- Jim Flynn Cumming, GA jflynn@america.net ******************* Georgia Ornithological Society http://www.gos.org/ *******************
