Position Title: Important Bird Area Coordinator
Department: Wyoming Audubon (Wyoming State Office of the National
Audubon Society)
Location: Casper, Wyoming
Purpose of Position:
The purpose of the position is to organize a comprehensive Bird Conservation
Program in Wyoming as part of Wyoming Audubon's mission to protect birds,
other wildlife and their habitats in the state. A primary focus of the
position is to implement the Important Bird (IBA) Project. Our Bird
Conservation Program will be based on priorities established through our IBA
Technical Committee, Wyoming Audubon chapters, National Audubon's Science
program (including WatchList), and Partners in Flight. Other important
elements of the Bird Conservation Program will be the conservation of key
habitat areas, initiation of Bird Banding Project at Audubon Center at Garden
Creek, and advocacy for Wyoming's species of special concern. The position
reports to the Wyoming Audubon Executive Director.
Essential Functions:
Work to protect and conserve Wyoming's Important Bird Areas in partnership
with the IBA Technical Committee, Audubon chapters, Wyoming Game and Fish
Department and other appropriate state and federal agencies, local
government, land trusts and other partners.
Actively engage Wyoming Audubon chapters in conservation and education work
at IBA sites within their local region.
Coordinate an ambitious bird volunteer monitoring and education effort around
IBA sites which involves training and coordination of Audubon and non-Audubon
volunteers.
Conduct outreach and education activities including public presentations,
written articles for popular literature and outreach with media.
Plan, coordinate and implement Bird Banding Project at Audubon Center at
Garden Creek.
Integrate the Wyoming Bird Conservation Program with other Audubon programs
and campaigns including Audubon Science, Wetlands, Forests, Partners in
Flight, BirdSource, Population and Habitat, Endangered Species, Refuge
Keepers and other projects of the Wyoming Audubon Society.
Requirements
Masters Degree or higher in Biology, Natural Resources Management, Regional
Planning, Environmental Studies, Ornithology or a related field. Equivalent
experience will be considered.
Candidate should have at least five years of work experience in natural
resources management, biology, or related environmental or conservation work.
Candidates should be well versed in conservation, biology and identification
of Wyoming birds. Experience in mapping, GIS, and similar skills is
desirable.
Candidate must have a proven record in project management including managing
grants, completing reports, contracts, articles and other projects.
Candidate must be self-motivated and willing to work in a flexible,
non-structured environment.
Candidate must be willing to conduct extensive in-state travel and be
comfortable with working evenings and weekends as job responsibilities
demand.
