In the lull before North American migration begins in earnest, here's a
little Neotropical respite...
Our recent 2-week rainy-season trip to Costa Rica exceeded expectations,
yielding 354 species, combining Carribean and Pacific lowlands, Highlands,
and some brief stops at mid elevations. The biggest total for single
location was ca. 180 species at Carara/Tarcol in 3 days, but 150 in the La
Selva area in a similar period wasn't bad either. Savegre Mountain is a
must for its unique assemblage, even though good views of Resplendent
Quetzal eluded us in July.
Highlights included 2 CR endemics--Mangrove Hummingbird at Tarcol and
Black-cheeked Ant-tanager at Marenco, over 100 Scarlet Macaws at these two
locations, 5 male Turquoise Cotingas in a tree on the grounds of our hotel
in San Isidro, the local and uncommon Tawny-chested Flycatcher outside La
Selva, 2 King Vultures and the beautiful little invader, Pearl Kite, 2
antpitta species well seen, and others too numerous to mention (but hit
the link and check the list). 42 tyrranids, 31 tanagers, 13 wrens...
One memory is how ubiquitous the calls of Black-hooded Antshrike and
Chestnut-backed Antbird are throughout the Pacific lowland rainforests
from Carara south to the Osa Peninsula.
Oh, also 17 spp. of mammals, including 3 of bats, seen roosting, all 4 of
the monkeys, the dwarf squirrel, and a humpback whale.
