I think that document brief statement is misleading. I think you must have SAS/Access for PC Formats. See page 29.

The "What's New" documentation for V8.1 indicates that it is now possible to import Excel2000 files (.xls file not just a .csv file) into a SAS dataset using PROC IMPORT (without having PROC ACCESS licensed). Since I do not have my V8.1 online help files yet, I was wondering if anyone has tried this and will be willing to share the syntax.
