Thanks to all who responded so promptly to my request - i have been provided with a number of solutions

I also have other variables in the dataset:
age, gender, course code, year of graduation, highest qualification place of study, post code
and i wish to be able to abnalyse them withouth the influence of the duplicates

eg - one student has enrolled 9 years in a row - part-time, couple of modules a year building up credit
