Thanks Ian for explaining the way SAS processes multiple datasets in the set statement. This is exactly the answer I wanted. I think it is more important to explain to the original poster what the problem was in their code. Once this hint is given, ask the poster to rewrite their code to make it work. If not successful, comeback to the list for the actual answer.

I think this would be a more rewarding experience from the point of view of the original poster. This reminds me of a quote.

"Give a man/woman a fish, he/she will eat for a day. Teach him /her to fish and he/she will eat for a lifetime."
