You may want to look at a series of papers on this topic in vol 25 (1990) issue1 of Multivariate Behavioral Research.
While I do not disagree with the responses that you are getting, this is a topic on which intellegent people strongly diagree. In this series of papers, you will read widly contrasting views.

Is there any difference between Factor Analysis and
Principal Component Analysis?
I have seen some stats people using it interchangeably
and refereeing them as a same analysis.
