Thanks for the helpful comments I received from Curtis Smith and Cindie Gareleck, concerning the problem I was having in reading SAS files from ACL.  I do have the SAS V8 ODBC Driver installed.  It turns out that it was not properly configured.  I followed the SAS Technical Support document TS-626 (available from SAS Institute's web site) to configure my SAS ODBC driver, and I am pleased to report that it now works perfectly!
