Michael,

Assuming the answer is a single punch (or one choice response), and you have those responses in two variables: Var1 and Var2. Var1 has five values which represent five distinct responses, Var2 has one values which sixth distinct response. Treat missing values as zero in both variables. Now you need to sum up these two variables into one variable, using the compute command:

COMPUTE var12 = var1 + var2 . EXECUTE .
