While I haven't tried it myself, I encounter a similar problem and am going
to look into:

They purportedly have a product, much cheaper than SAS's ODBC drivers, that
allow one to import both SAS 8 files as well as a number of other formats.
I have a similar problem in that I need to read in UNIX SAS files, but don't
want to continue maintaining a UNIX box just for that purpose.
