The old(er) versions had a default maximum logical record length of 1024
bytes for raw data, but this limit could easily be bypassed by using file
handles and specifying a longer logical record length.

I'll toss in my two cents -- are the record lengths very long? In earlier
versions of SPSS, the program had a limit which I ran into. I don't know
if the newer versions have record length limits -- anyone know?

What is the size of the input file?
Is the input file ASCII with a long record?
Is the data set already an SPSS system file?
Do you get anything in the listing (.spo) file?
Does crash mean that you get a lot of errors on the listing? That SPSS
freezes? The SPSS exits with an error message? That the whole system locks
up and needs to be rebooted?
Try to find out what your users mean by large, many variables, many cases,
trying to do crosstabs where the variables have thousands of values?
<file> <display data info> to get a description of the file
<file> <options> <general> and see where the temporary directory is.
Does that disk have at least 4 times the size of the system file available
if you want to sort it? E.g., if your input file is 2G you need to have 8G
available for a sort.
