I stumbled onto this website run by the National Wildlife Federation and I am impressed. For the birds, they have an online guide with thumbnail pictures that lead to basic description pages. They have a migration guide that lists the birds that arrive before this or that date. It is rather general but it is good basic information and beautifully done. (I hope that the information is accurate and I trust that basically it is. I'm sure there are always exceptions.) In addition, they have guides to everything else too - wildflowers, butterflies, native plants, everything. And you can make a local guide for your zipcode that lists species for your area. You can also keep a lifelist and a backyard list of not only birds but also the other 4000 species they have there! I think it's great. eNature.com
