I don't know of any easy way to remove them, but if you just want to turn
them off use the SET command. For example:
SET tvars names.

In the Options dialog box (Edit - Options) at the General page of
options, choose "Show variable names" instead of "labels" in the upper
right option buttons.
You can keep the labels for the purpose of producing output. This option
only affects how variable lists are shown in dialog boxes.
