We are just under going exactly this conversion. We have a bespoke version control application, written in SAS, which allows us to promote individual items within catalogs from environment to environment. PVCS dimensions is just being implemented (corporate decision - all PC based systems to use it). We aren't overly happy - our current system is built into each of the SAS environments that we have, and you simply use a frame entry to move code about.

Catalog entries are simply binary files, which it can cope with (apparently). This means that the tool can manage versions at a catalog level, but no lower (may be a restriction for some). There is no requirement to export to text files.

IMHO, it would be simpler (and probably quicker), and infinitely more customisable to write your own system in SAS. Ours took me 2 days to do. The PVCS implementation has taken 3 days of consultancy (times 2 people from Merant), plus a day out of the office training for each user (6 in my team). I count that to be 12 days. We reckon on about £50 per hour for our time, and I have no doubt Merant is more expensive than that.

Hope this helps a bit...

Off Topic...

Any experience about using a version control tool, PVCS Dimensions, by Merant (http://www.pvcs.com) integrating with SAS, for controlling catalog SCL, frame, source, ... entries? Can SAS & Dimensions seamlessly work together?

Of course, we can export a catalog entry to text file then put under Dimensions control, but that's too labor intensive.

Also, what about a FRAME entry? Can we export a FRAME entry to text file?

TIA

Michael
