my PROC REPORT is rusty! I just pulled out the class notes and you are
right! It is very similar to FOCUS. It's been a while since I've
used FOCUS, as well (same time frame) - last time I used it, it was to replicate
phone bills, of all things, so users could verify invoices out of the COBOL
programs rather than having to look at raw data.

Hi, Andre!

OK, here's my $.02... I've worked with both FOCUS and
SAS at different stages in my career. I learned FOCUS first (1988 or
so) and, I remember when I first started learning SAS, I kept trying to use
FOCUS syntax - in some cases, they're *almost* interchangeable!

If you want a tool to do reporting - straightforward, no
statistical functions - I think FOCUS is a better fit. One table file
fits all kinds of reports you might want to do - including subsetting,
totalling, page breaks, headers, footers, etc. - and you can get alot
fancier with your output with alot less training than with SAS.

If you want a tool to do data cleansing, updating,
processing, and statistical reporting, SAS wins hands down.

If you have a group of users who are accustomed to FOCUS,
they'll learn SAS pretty quickly; but you will hear more than a few gripes
when they learn that they need to write a couple of data steps and a proc
print or two to get a report they used to get with one table
file...
