Carla,

I almost always recommend this book to beginners: http://www.sas.com/apps/pubscat/bookdetails.jsp?catid=1&pc=56074

In fact my copy is on loan to a Muskie fellow from Tajikistan doing his summer internship at the CDC. It covers the basics like statements and variables and has a nice section on the data step process. It also has some basic procedures. Later you can read about the documentation on the CLUSTER procedure on-line and ask question here. Somethings will change but the basics should be relatively the same between v6 and v8/v9.

Good luck,

Kevin
