Aha! You're right -- the table with the one variable actually has multiple
records per case, and I should have just saved out one instance of each
record first before trying to merge it. The error message wasn't terribly
enlightening.

duplicate value in a key variable (remember, blanks and system-missing data
count as values in a merge) or that one or both files have not been
properly sorted. The defect is that the application should just issue an
error and not execute the command instead of crashing completely with the
assertion failure.
