I participated in a USFWS shorebird survey this morning on Blackbeard Island. The storm off the coast brought plenty of wind, if not birds.
The list of shorebirds is as follows:
Sanderling ~ 150
Red Knot ~ 90
Ruddy Turnstone - 12
Semipalmated Plover - 9
American Oystercatcher - 2
Willet - 2
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 1
In addition to Brown Pelicans and Laughing Gulls, the following terns were there:
Royal - many
Common ~ 50 (juvenile)
Sandwich - 13
Black ~ 16 (juvenile)
Forster's - 2 (juvenile)
Caspian - 1
The most unusual bird of the day had to be :
Bare-breasted Sun-bird, - 1 adult female. (No need to chase this rarity, guys. We saw it leave...
