I have some recall of a "coefficient of congruence" that could be calculated by hand to compare factor structures obtained from different samples. It required the same number of factors and they needed to be orthogonal.

I agree with John Painter's earlier suggestion of doing multi-group analysis within lisrel or amos or eqs.

You can do this by rotating the factors to a target matrix in an exploratory factor analysis. I have seen a macro to do this in SPSS somewhere, but I can't think where.
