I'm going with Sig on this one. (Like I ever disagree with him on SQL issues!) While I have done tricks with monotonic(), even in this venue, I don't think it is the best idea in the world. I prefer to think of SQL as being set-based, rather than based on a sequential tabular structure. As such, adding sequential characteristics may provide data step features, but it doesn't 'feel' right.

But then, I've been known to mix SAS and Perl together, so my sense of right and wrong is clearly debatable. :-)
