My approach would be to create a Make-Table query in Access, in addition to
the numeric field values, also include the lookup table labels for
them. Run the query and then import this new table into SPSS. Then do an
autorecode on the imported string values derived from the lookup
tables. Run frequencies on everything afterwards to be sure these
transformations worked as they should.
Variable labels are another matter. Since you have to create a database
query to import from Access, you can paste the query syntax and make your
variable label modifications there. In v11, the database wizard gives you
the option to autorecode alpha values in the database file.
