All,
I am presenting a paper on this topic at SESUG in two weeks:
SAS Consultants: Sheep in Wolfs Clothing. There are a large
number of factors to consider, IRS standing, taxes, expenses
(time and money), legal issues, insurance issues, permits,
retirment (401k, Keogh), liability issues, etc.
The paper can be found in the next SESUG proceedings or will be
sent to anyone who is interested.

Chuckster's advice (and site) *is* good for Jules has done pretty much the
gamut.
Also check the archives for this topic comes up a few times per year (in
particular, look for posts from Michael "Mad Doggy" Davis and Andrew Karp).
I just wanted to point out that you're really asking two questions:
1) to go or not go w/ 1099's
2) to incorporate or not to incorporate
.... those are the questions <g>
i.e., do you want to go out on your own, and if so, under what kind of
business model.
The latter question, I feel, is something that is a function of many
variables (e.g., how many engagements/clients you'll have/service, you're
projected income, how much you want to pay in Social Security, state tax
codes ... whether you're a contract code-dog, or developing line-of-biz
"apps" for someone [can you say "liability"?]) and, as such, talking w/ a
CPA and/or a tax attorney would help as well.
Bottom line: for me doing #1 was easy and I was simply a "sole proprietor"
for many years, recently I went to a LLC (Limited Liability Corporation)
and am now contemplating going to a full Corp.
Good luck in the mercenary world of the self-employed (if you so choose)!!
