Thanks to everybody for your ideas on this. Pere-Joan's suggestion is the closest to what I had in mind, but I'm going to experiment with the script approach and the titles and maybe end up using all three methods. Raynald's site (http://pages.infinit.net/rlevesqu/index.htm) is a real treasure chest!
