I have a several variables, e.g reason11, reason12, reason 13, reason 21,
reason22 etc that consist of text. Within each variable, at different
points within the text are codes: [ec] [es] [ei] [ee] [ua] etc. There is a
single code per variable item.

Below are two examples:

[sb] homebound, nothing on the telly
wanted to smoke [uw]
so don't kill [sd] the kids

I am hoping I can use SPSS to extract the codes, deleting the remaining
text.  Any suggestions are appreciated.
