NYASUG Meeting Announcement -- 1st Reminder !

For members of SAS-L in the Tri-State area who are also members of the New York Area SAS Users Group (NYASUG):

The next meeting of the New York Area SAS Users Group will be on Thursday, December 12, 2002. This will be a half day meeting with 3 scheduled presentations.

This meeting also marks NYASUG's return to the Bank of New York building, which hosted our meetings for several years prior to the 9/11 attacks.

Thanks to BONY and James Lynch (NYASUG member and BONY VP) for arranging our return. Directions to the BONY site are at the end of this text.

The following are abstracts of the scheduled presentations:

Enterprise Guide Version 2.0

by James Blaha

Enterprise Guide is a tool that if used properly can dramatically increase user productivity and assist in increasing your technology ROI. Rapid deployment of critical information in multiple formats (e.g. HTML, PDF, RTF) helps empower those power users who know their data to generate crucial ad hoc SAS reports on the fly without programmer intervention.

At Pace University, Enterprise Guide is used to access data stored in DB/2 on an IBM S/390 mainframe, and return the information to the user for interrogation, manipulation and dissemination.

This presentation will be dealing with simple data and will be focusing on getting the concepts of Enterprise Guide understood. The presentation will include a demonstration of Enterprise Guide 2.0.

Biography

James Blaha is an Internet Programmer/Analyst with the Computer Systems Department (DoIT) at Pace University, as well as a member of the HASUG Steering Committee.

Testing 1,2,3: Simple Methods for Determining Redundancies

by Eric Rosenberg

Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, is arguably the largest tester of consumer products on the planet, ranging from answering machines, printers, telephones, cameras dishwashing detergents, etc. The organization faces the challenge of testing an expanding universe of products and product types. Identifying and removing test procedures that add little or no new information to determinations is essential for Consumers Union to remain competitive.

Eliminating redundant procedures begins with the identification of results with high correlation coefficients. Unfortunately, correlation analysis is extremely sensitive to the impact of outliers. Several traditional methods are presented for identifying outliers, along with their influence and leverage. However, due to the nature of test procedures, missing data or experimental design, these approaches may not be appropriate. The effectiveness of repeated random removal of data (jackknifing) will be discussed.

Biography

Eric Rosenberg, when not canning pickles and preserves in his tiny West Village apartment, Eric Rosenberg devotes his free time to working at Consumers Union. He has been abusing SAS in a wide variety of applications for the last 7 years. Eric gingerly holds masters degrees in Economics and Statistics from Columbia University

SAS/Microsoft Office Integration and SAS Internet-Enabled OLAP Reporting for the Financial, Telecommunications and Pharma-ceutical Industries

by George Bukhbinder

SAS on-line analytical processing (OLAP) and Microsoft pivot tables are traditionally used for the Internet-enabled information delivery from data warehouses. This presentation addresses several factors important to the successful implementation of OLAP based on SAS multidimensional databases. We will also outline programming techniques required for creating Microsoft pivot tables and complicated Excel reports directly from SAS.

The presentation includes a demonstration of Internet-enabled OLAP used as an interface to a data warehouse and describes the business benefits of building a powerful decision support system using examples from the telecommunications and insurance industries. In addition, we will use several examples from the system developed for occupation health management to demonstrate reporting based on the integration of SAS and Microsoft Office. We will compare three different OLAP methods, based on (1) SAS multidimensional databases, (2) SAS summary tables, (3) Microsoft pivot tables.

Biography

George Bukhbinder is the President of Palisades Research, Inc. He has over 20 years of experience in database design and development, statistical modeling and profitability optimization. He has worked extensively on the development and implementation of information systems for marketing support, strategic and financial planning, and web-enabled on-line analytical processing. He is a regular speaker at major national conferences.
