Subject: PC specification for running SAS
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Dear Friends: I have a slightly off topic question that I hope someone can give me some insights.

Our group is planing to buy a powerful PC to run SAS. The kind of datasets we deal with are for database marketing and therefore huge (over 1000 variables and up to 10 M records). We constantly have to perform merges and data processing involving multiple such datasets. The kind of statistical procedures we use are also quite time consuming, such as proc catmod with many parameters and constraints. The idea is to buy a powerful PC as a "analytical server" dedicated to SAS usage. I wonder if you have any suggestion on the PC configuration, such as CPU,memory size, and other features that SAS may take advantage of. We are unfortunately running XP as the OS. So, for example, if SAS can only use up to 2G memory, then, there is no point to get 3G memory. Thanks a lot for your help!

Hongjie Wang
