I too presume that the asterisk designates a missing value.

Assuming that there are no asterisks which must be preserved as such, "_INFILE_ Magic" can be employed here:

data asterisk_means_missing; infile 'copy.txt' firstobs=2; input @ ; _infile_ = translate(_infile_,'.','*'); input wealth age region $; run;
