Version 9.1 - Now It Gets Interesting Parts I and II
by Paul Kent
The bulk of the new functionality delivered with SAS
Version 9.0 were improvements to software you already
had. Version 9.1 is where the revolutionary new
components begin. Paul will cover improvements,
enhancements and new features in existing products
(base SAS, CONNECT, SAS MDDB Server, SHARE, and SPDS)
in Part I.
Part II will be a presentation of the enterprise level
features of the new 9.1 Business Intelligence Platform
- portal based
- web reporting
- integrated metadata.
The latter is an important concept to SAS as it
represents the platform that they are building all
their new solutions on (and they hope customers will
too).
Biography
Paul Kent is Senior Research and Development Director,
Base SAS Research. Paul leads a team of over 160
people who create base SAS and other SAS software
products, such as SAS/CONNECT, SAS MDDB Server,
SAS/SHARE, and SPDS.
Paul joined SAS in 1984 as a Technical Marketing
Representative and eventually moved into the Research
and Development division. He has used SAS for more
than 20 years and has made many contributions to the
software, including PROC SQL, the WHERE clause, TCP/IP
connectivity, and portions of the Version 8 Output
Delivery System (ODS).
Prior to joining SAS, Paul worked with SAS software at
Decision Support Services in Johannesburg, South
Africa.

SAS/Microsoft Office Integration and SAS
Internet-Enabled OLAP Reporting for the Financial,
Telecommunications and Pharma-ceutical Industries
by George Bukhbinder
SAS on-line analytical processing (OLAP) and Microsoft
pivot tables are traditionally used for the
Internet-enabled information delivery from data
warehouses. This presentation addresses several
factors important to the successful implementation of
OLAP based on SAS multidimensional databases. We will
also outline programming techniques required for
creating Microsoft pivot tables and complicated Excel
reports directly from SAS.
The presentation includes a demonstration of
Internet-enabled OLAP used as an interface to a data
warehouse and describes the business benefits of
building a powerful decision support system using
examples from the telecommunications and insurance
industries. In addition, we will use several examples
from the system developed for occupation health
management to demonstrate reporting based on the
integration of SAS and Microsoft Office. We will
compare three different OLAP methods, based on (1) SAS
multidimensional databases, (2) SAS summary tables, (3)
Microsoft pivot tables.
Biography
George Bukhbinder is the President of Palisades
Research, Inc. He has over 20 years of experience in
database design and development, statistical modeling
and profitability optimization. He has worked
extensively on the development and implementation of
information systems for marketing support, strategic
and financial planning, and web-enabled on-line
analytical processing. He is a regular speaker at
major national conferences.
