This morning on the Stockton-Grand Bay-Hahira BBS route, I had my first
singing Field Sparrow since I've been doing the route (15 years). It's
mostly absent as a breeder in extreme SE Georgia including Lowndes Co.; I
guess after today I'd say it's an "irregular breeder" in Lowndes.
Extreme south-central GA is also about the only place in the state where
Yellow-breasted Chat is rare as a breeder, so it was good to hear 2 of
them at a new area of the route.
But the strangest thing was that we heard 4 calling Great-horned Owls at
stops 4,5 and 6 (up till 6:30 am), conservatively recorded as 3 due to one
possible duplicate. I rarely ever get even one GHOW. 3 Wood Storks, 3
Bachman's Sparrows at 2 stops, 2 fledgling Barred Owls and a Mississippi
Kite complete the highlights. Alas, no Wood Thrush, which has been the
trend of late, and very few Red-eyed Vireos.
