Good morning,
I hope everyone enjoyed and appreciated their Memorial Day. My dad and
I went birding on the farm today and located a Willow Flycatcher down at the
pond. As the farm is in Forsyth County and a bit closer than most of the
Willow Flycatcher's reported I thought some of you might be interested in
going
to see it. To get to the farm take GA 400 to exit 17 and go east. You will
be on hwy 306 and will drive ~ 1 mile until you reach a traffic light. Go
straight for ~ 6 more miles until you reach Jot-em Down Road at the next
traffic
light (yes it's a strange name for a road, but it has a bit of history to it
as well). Turn left (north) and travel .7 miles to the farm. It will be on
your left (west) and there are actually two driveways. The first is
concrete and goes to the house. The second is dirt and goes to the farm.
The pond is down the dirt lane and all the way in the back. You
will not be able to drive back there due to this years deluges. Wear clothes
you don't mind getting muddy, wet, or both. The flycatcher is obviously in
the hawthorns and willows around the pond and was vocalizing excessively
until at least 10:30 yesterday. The habitat is perfect for them to breed and
I will keep
you posted if that is the case. A scope will be helpful for actually viewing
the flycatcher, but not essential. There are also a lot of other stellar
birds on the farm (Yellow Warblers, E. Meadowlarks, E. Kingbirds, Green
Herons,
Blue Grosbeaks, No. Bobwhites, lots of swallows, Grasshopper Sparrows
(although these are quite difficult to actually locate!), etc.) so keep your
eyes out.
Also look for the plethora of frogs and water snakes! Some of them are
quite large and impressive! Three additional tips: (1) Don't touch the
electric
fences as they are all hot. It may be fun to push your friend into it, but I
assure you you DO NOT want to be the one touching it! (2) If you run into
my dad DO NOT encourage him to start telling jokes. He gets most of them
from
A Prairie Home Companion and they can be somewhat painful. (3) Watch out
for Xerox the bull. He is large and not crazy about our species.
If you have any additional questions you can either call me at home
706-265-7291 or e-mail me at work akinsey@forsyth.k12.ga.us. You might also
call my
parents to make sure they are around, 770-887-5541- home or 706-216-1644
-work (dad). Although if they are home they will quite likely be in the
back yard. Thus, if you are in the neighborhood and its after 4:00 p.m. you
might just stop by and check.
