Subject: join on different data types -- ACCESS to Oracle

I have two columns I need to join on (v8.2 on Windows, SAS/ACCESS to Oracle 9i). One is varchar and the other is numeric. I am unable to use put or input to convert one of the data types on the fly. How do people usually get around this? TIA.
