One further method for possibly speeding the process would be to break your file into 3 or 4 subsets and sort each independently. Then rebuild the large file by interleaving it

Data big; set small1 small2 small3; by index1 index2 etc ;

Of course, it might also be a good time to ask whether you need to move to a computer with a lot more horsepower and memory.
