Subject: north Georgia birds

This past Sunday, I birded in Union County, GA, including Brasstown Bald and Nottely Dam. Audrey Hoff and I, both from Knoxville, TN, were mostly birding, but also partly hoping to come across a Tawny Crescent butterfly (we did not, though we did get a life butterfly - Carolina Satyr).

Brasstown Bald sure looks like a place we need to return to for spring and fall birding! We had the following birds there (I did not keep track of numbers)

Broad-winged Hawk 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird Downy Woodpecker E Phoebe Blue Jay American Crow Carolina Chickadee Am Robin Wood Thrush 1 Veery - there were several of these, many singing. Gray Catbird - several, singing Brown Thrasher Cedar Waxwing Blue-headed Vireo - several, singing Blackburnian Warbler 1 female Black-throated Blue Warbler 5+ Canada Warbler 2, singing Chestnut-sided Warbler at least 1 Scarlet Tanager 10+ Indigo Bunting few, near bottom of mountain N Cardinal Rose-breasted Grosbeak around 10! Seems to be a good population of them there. We don't see too many in summer in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee/N Carolina Dark-eyed Junco E Towhee Am Goldfinch

At Nottely Dam, we ran into a small wave of birds near the recreation/boat launch area, including: Yellow-billed Cuckoo Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Cedar Waxwing Red-eyed (1), White-eyed (1) and Yellow-throated (2) Vireos Black-and-white Warbler 3 Blue-winged Warbler at least 3 Yellow-throated Warbler 1 Scarlet Tanager 5+ these were certainly in evidence this day! Rose-breasted Grosbeak at least 3

I added 11 new species to my Georgia list, but missed grouse and raven (Audrey heard what may have been one, on Brasstown Bald)
