Earl Horn and I spent the morning and early afternoon birding Walton Co.
and Hard Labor Creek State Park (DeLorme p. 28 grid C1), with a quick trip
through northern Newton Co. as well, in the Lake Varner (=Cornish Creek
Newton Co. Reservoir in DeLorme, p. 27 grid C8-C9) area. Nothing
spectacular to report from today, but a decent day nonetheless. Here are
the highlights:
Great Egret - a few around; 2 at the north end of Lake Varner, Walton Co.,
one at the Walton State Fish Hatchery (DeLorme p. 27 grid D10)
Little Blue Heron - 2 immatures at "Sewage Treatment Pond No. 2", Walton
Co. (DeLorme p. 27 grid B-9; only a tiny bit of this pond is visible from
the road) and one adult at the Beaver Pond, Hard Labor Creek SP
Osprey - 1 along Flat Rock Rd. (which crosses Lake Varner, although DeLorme
doesn't show this; p. 27, grid C-8)
Wild Turkey - 9 foraging under a feeder in some lucky person's yard in Monroe
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 along a farm pond in Walton Co.; our only
non-Killdeer shorebird for the day
Eurasian Collared-Dove - 2 in northern Monroe along GA 11
Blue-headed Vireo - 1 doing a great imitation of a Yellow-throated Vireo as
it was singing from the top of a poplar tree in southern Monroe
House Wren - 5, well represented this morning in northern Walton Co.
American Redstart - 1 immature male, northern Walton Co.
Worm-eating Warbler - 4 at three different locations in Walton Co.,
including one at the north end of Lake Varner
Louisiana Waterthrush - 2 at two different stream crossing in northern
Walton Co.
(Ten species of warblers today: Northern Parula, Prairie, Black-and-white,
American Redstart, Worm-eating, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky, Common
Yellowthroat, Hooded, Yellow-breasted Chat)
Scarlet Tanager - 1 male along the Beaver Pond Trail at Hard Labor Creek SP
Eastern Towhee - lots and lots, but we found yellow-eyed males at two
locations in Walton Co. (one was at the north end of Lake Varner)
Grasshopper Sparrow - 2 along Gregory Rd. in northern Newton Co.
Take care.
