Excel has two different sorts of protection. The obvious one, Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet, lets you assign a password that prevents changing the sheet. However, it does not prevent anyone from reading or viewing the file. SPSS can still open this file.

There is another password mechanism, well hidden, that prevents anyone from viewing the sheet without the password. You apply this by doing a Save As and then click the Tools menu in the Save dialog box. There you can assign a password that has nothing to do with the other one. If you protect your document that way, SPSS cannot read it. SPSS is good -- but not that good :-)

I just opened a protected excel workbook (requires password) in SPSS. Does anybody know why SPSS can open protected workbooks?

I'm trying to automate a report that looks at data in a 12 and 3 month time window. Is there some way to "call" the current date from the PC's clock in syntax so that I can build the appropriate filters for the two time frames?

Thanks,
