There is no official Oxbow count yet. The Columbus CBC does not include the Oxbow area so the OM staff and CAS are trying some unofficial counts until we can get some future commitments as far as participation goes and other technicalities that go along with having an official count. So anyway, Bill Birkhead met me around 7:15 at the north application field (like the Eufaula count I happened to get a late start which means no owls!) and we birded for about 5 hours. We picked up 78 spp. (72 with the two of us --Bill added 6 spp. after I left) which isn't too bad for an OM winter count.
Highlights:
Anhinga - 5
Osprey - 1
Nothern Harrier - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 7
Red-shouldered Hawk - 6
American Kestrel - 1
Sandhill Crane - 2 (only the second OM record)
Greater Yellowlegs - 3
Least Sandpiper - 7
Spotted Sandpiper - 1
Common Ground-Dove - 1
Hermit Thrush - 1
Winter Wren - 2
Blue-headed Vireo - 7 (good single day count for here)
Orange-crowned Warbler - 2
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER - 1 (should be absent or casual at best along the fall line now)
Fox Sparrow - 2
Vesper Sparrow - 25+
