Unfortunately, the volunteers who spend countless hours of their personal
time developing the protocols for the use of this listserver, as well as
administering the rules of use for this listserver, generally don't receive
thanks from those of us who use this convenient tool to promote and enjoy
birding and ornithology in Georgia. Instead, they are the targets of public
criticism when they do their job and enforce rules that the majority of
Georgia birders agreed with when they were first posted to the listserver.
If some feel that the rules are unfair or outdated or being abused,
constructive criticism sent privately to the GABO administrators is always
appreciated.
I agree that we should all make a concerted effort to consider the feelings
of others before we post something that might be construed as insulting or
embarrassing. If someone posts something questionable such as the
Ivory-billed Woodpecker I saw in Macon Sunday (I'm just joking!), I hope
everyone will send me a private message telling me to give up birding for
bowling, rather than responding to all GABO saying that Bob doesn't know
which end of binoculars to look through. With regards to the checklist
error concerning the Bachman's Sparrow, I sent a private message to the
person who noted the error suggesting, never criticizing, that it would be
better if the mistake was privately pointed out to the person who could fix
it (in this case Jim Flynn, the GOS webmaster, though he didn't make the
mistake), rather than listing it on GABO. Jim, who has done an
extraordinary job in building and maintaining (and dealing with all of my
aggravating comments) the GOS web site, would have fixed the error, then
sent out a message to GABO letting everyone know that the checklist had been
altered. This had nothing to do with rules or protocol, and I am glad that
the error was identified.
The GOS bylaws cover every aspect of the organization's functions, not just
the rules of the Checklist & Records Committee. If the rules established by
that committee are not being followed, I'm sure the members of that
committee (and myself) would like to know what is being done wrong, and they
will correct the problem. GOS exists to promote ornithology & bird
conservation in GA, and can only become more effective in meeting that goal
when passionate birders join and work to help improve the society.

clarification
I echo many of Sheila's sentiments.
So, who are the GOS police? Are they the same ones who think that it is
okay for them to attack another birder's credibility/identification on
GABO rather that inquiring personally?
GOS is an organization that does not even follow its own by-laws (i.e.
terms of the Records Committee). If this person or persons that Sheila
referred to are so worried about rules and protocol, then he/she better
look more closely at his/her organization.
Furthermore, GABO does not follow its rules either. Did you know you could
sell and advertise on it if you are "in" with its police department?
I am tired of the double standards in this state. It only breeds division.
