Subject:   Problems saving data to excel with labels
Content-Type:   text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hello all,

We have a client that has the following problems using SPSS 11.5.2.1 who works with PC's that use 256 RAM and a Pentium IV processor and administer the licenses using SPSSlm on their LAN:

1. Data files aren't being saved properly from SPSS to Excel using the 'Save value labels where defined instead of data values' option. Before when they were using SPSS 11.5.1 and they contacted us about this, we suggested that they install the patch to update the version to 11.5.2.1. They did so, but this didn't solve the problem. Whenever they attempt to save as an xls file sometimes when they open the file only Excel opens without an active work sheet. Other times Excel opens a work sheet with the variables saved from SPSS, but there is loss of data with many cells that should have valid values which appear as null with the typical text #Null! that appears for missing numeric values saved from SPSS to Excel.

2. SPSS hangs realizing simple operations. Whenever they apply functions such as filters it takes SPSS a long time to process the data. They don't have that many cases in the data files. The average size of a data set is about 100,000 cases. Before, they had the license administration configured in such a way that the clients had thin installations of SPSS. When they told us about this, we suggested that instead of using thin clients they use a full installation of the software. This didn't solve the problem, and SPSS hangs as before.

Does someone have any suggestions on how to solve these problems?

Thanks in advance,

Vito Palligas SPSS Chile
