Alternatively, could the original poster be trying to read in flat files using the syntax for SAS data sets?

It's hard to tell without either additional info (like the actual data, SAS code, and SAS logs), or else help from the Psychic Friends Hotline. (But they got shut down by the Feds, how did they not see that coming?)
