Georgann Schmalz and I visited a few Wildlife Management Areas that are
also Important Bird Areas (IBAs) yesterday (DiLane Plantation, Yuchi,
and Phinizy Swamp along with Big Duke's Pond). Pretty slow for three
areas with sparrows (field, chipping, and white-throated), hawks,
yellow-rump and palm warblers, R-C kinglets (no O-C ones), phoebes,
blue-headed vireo, and lots of woodpeckers. However, at Phinizy Swamp,
there were two indigo buntings (females) and a black-and-white warbler
that we didn't expect to see at this time of year. These were seen along
the first boardwalk near the parking lot. At Phinizy, there were also
many (50+) ring-necked ducks and scaup, along with a few pied-billed
grebes, great egrets, plus several sora and king rails heard. Two small
shorebirds were seen briefly at the Equalization Pond that were probably
western sandpipers.
