Seems, that that is no SAS data file! Do you know where the file comes from? Maybe it is a file in transport or xport format (exported with proc cport or the xport engine)? Just browse the file and compare it with any other (correct) file. Is the extension ok? You could create a v6 file "test" to see, what SAS has as extension. I assume, that you have a transport file. Do you find any string like CPORT or XPORT? If yes, either try proc cimport infile="/.....xxx.ssd04" lib=; or allocate that file with

libname a xport ".....";
