I bought Carpenter's 1998 version about 6 months ago, and have found it extremely helpful (though I should really work through it more consistently). After reading Ron's review of the new edition I feel cheated, however. I've found Carpenter's book easier to use as a reference than Burlew, though I can't say exactly why.

I wish I'd read your review two days ago! I just ordered "SAS Macro Programming Made Easy" by Michele M. Burlew;Paperback; $35.95

The online reviews were mostly favorable. Any other opinions?

You'll want to buy the book, not just because I like it, and wrote the glowing recommendation on the back cover http://www.listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0402C&L=sas-l&P=R20979 but because it explains all the macros in the examples, as well as the occasional bugs or gotchas in the code. ;-)
