Michael:

This syntax does it.

COMPUTE caseid = $CASENUM. EXECUTE.

Hope this helps

Frederic

Para: SPSSX-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU cc: Asunto: Generating Case Numbers

Dear List:

I am working with a system file which includes approx. 8,000 cases (one case per row--originally imported from a MS Access spreadsheet) and 100 vars. The file presently lacks, however, an ID var which assigns to each case a unique ID number. Can I generate (compute) such a new var easily in SPSS? Ideally, something as simple as a sequential number, 1 thru 8,000, is all that I need. Thanks.
