OR . . . you could avoid data entry altogether by going with the SPSS Data
Entry Builder software. We do virtually all our surveys online (though that
is only 1 method of collecting data using the Builder), soliciting input
from students, staff and parents all over the world. There is no data entry
because responses go directly into an SPSS data file. It has reduced our
workload, eliminated data entry errors, and vastly reduced our turnaround
time. Not to sound like a walking SPSS commercial, but . . . it sure has
worked for us! Version 4.0 has greatly improved the program's capabilities.

We use TELEform v6.1 in our lab for the bulk of the
automated data entry. Without sounding too much like an
unpaid advertisement, the product has a few features I like:
-Form creation and configuration is relatively
straightforward
-Primary and secondary exports to many popular database
formats, as well as an internal export database.
-Though we don't use it much at the moment, decent data
validation options, including ODBC connectivity.
We do almost 100% numerical entry, as handwritten responses
are hand-coded separately. TELEform has 'image zone'
functionality, though I'm not familiar with the extent of
its capabilities.
Feel free to email me off-list if you want to ask other
questions. Hope this helps!
