Family commitments prevented me from joining the rest of the fold at the coast this weekend, but I did have some time to bird on Saturday in Putnam Co. I covered BF Grant WMA (northwest part of the county, DeLorme p.28, grid G-2), Tom Thompson Dairy Farm along GA 44 just north east of Eatonton, and the Oconee Waterfowl Management Area off of GA 16 on the west side of Lake Sinclair/Oconee R. (Delorme p28, grid H-5). Much to my disappointment, the impoundments at the Oconee WMA were all dry and look like they had been for some time.

I started just before dawn in BF Grant WMA, spent most of the morning along the roads and trails throughout the WMA, then headed for the Tom Thompson Dairy Farm around lunch time and ended in the early afternoon at the Oconee WMA. The pre-dawn thrush flight was a little on the light side, but I did have some Swainson's Thrushes and a few Gray-cheeked Thrushes.

Here are the highlights for the day:

Waterfowl: - Wood Duck: 5, BF Grant WMA - Mallard: 6, Tom Thompson Farm - Blue-winged Teal: 3, Tom Thompson Farm - Northern Shoveler: 1, Tom Thompson Farm - Ring-necked Duck: 1 male, Tom Thompson Farm

Pied-billed Grebe: 1, Tom Thompson Farm

Sharp-shinned Hawk: 2, BF Grant WMA

Cooper's Hawk: 1, BF Grant WMA

Shorebirds: - Killdeer: just 1, and it was heard before dawn - Lesser Yellowlegs: 1, Tom Thompson Farm - Least Sandpiper: 23, Tom Thompson Farm - Wilson's Snipe: 1, Tom Thompson Farm

Red-headed Woodpecker: 14, BF Grant WMA; a pretty decent number, they seemed to be everywhere

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker: 2, BF Grant WMA

Hairy Woodpecker: 6, BF Grant WMA

Tree Swallow: 11, Tom Thompson Farm

House Wren: 1, Oconee WMA

Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 2, BF Grant WMA

Wood Thrush: 12, BF Grant WMA; another species that seemed to be everywhere

Warbler (15 species): - Tennessee: 4, BF Grant WMA - Northern Parula: 1, BF Grant WMA - Chestnut-sided Warbler: 2, BF Grant WMA - Magnolia Warbler: 8, BF Grant WMA; 1, Oconee WMA - Black-throated Green Warbler: 2, BF Grant WMA - Blackburnian Warbler: 1, BF Grant WMA - Pine Warbler: 12 - Prairie Warbler: 1, Oconee WMA - Palm: 1 western, Oconee WMA - Black-and-white Warbler: 1, BF Grant WMA - American Redstart: 1, Tom Thompson Farm; 1, Oconee WMA - Ovenbird: 1, BF Grant WMA - Northern Waterthrush: 2, BF Grant WMA - Common Yellowthroat: 9 - Hooded Warbler: 4, BF Grant WMA
