Subject: CICS VSAM Copy and RLS
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hello,

I've just downloaded Leigh Compton's paper on "Getting the most out of your VSAM data", linked to from Bob's newsletter.

On page 23, when discussing 'CICS VSAM Copy', the restriction is mentioned:

"Non-shared files - No SHAREOPTION 3 or 4 - No VSAM RLS"

This statement, and the 'How it works' following page, lead me to believe that CICS VC does not support VSAM RLS (it works be sitting in the CICS region monitoring updates to the dataset being copied, so it can provide the correct 'before' image for any records being updated by in-flight tasks when the request is made).

Given the shift to VSAM RLS, isn't this kind of disappointing (if true)? Would it be possible for a future release to have the copy task sit in the SMSVSAM address space and achieve the same, but for RLS files?

Does anyone know if my conclusion is correct? Any info appreciated ...

I've just re-read the CICS VC announcement letter. In 'restrictions' it states:

"Shareoption 3/4 data sets (or any other VSAM data sets that are capable of being updated from more than one CICS region). If a request is received for a Shareoption 3/4 data set, CICS VSAM Copy will generate a job log message to this effect, then continue with the request. It is up to the user to ensure before the process begins, that the data set is being updated only from the CICS region that CICS VSAM Copy is processing."

I guess "any other VSAM datasets that are capable of being updated from more than one CICS region" means VSAM RLS (odd that this wasn't explicitly mentioned). Darn.
