Hi all,

I've been trying to write a syntax for my analysis but I'm not a very advanced SPSS user and I'm having huge problems. I have a file of 2100 subjects and each subject has a different number of family members (from 0 to 15, e.g., for ID1 there are 4 cases/family members, father mother two brothers ), so the total in my file is over 10000 cases. I need to create an additional variable for each subject representing whether "any family member" (of that subject) has a condition X. If the condition X is in the family the subject will be labeled as "positive" I'm sure this will involve some kind of looping, lagging and who knows what else. At any rate I just don't know the spss language and don't know these "tricks." I have already spent a lot of time trying to learn the basics and figured that by the time I'm proficient at it my boss will fire me :-) Please help,

Thanks in advance,

Iwona
