Hey folks,
Hope everyone is fine. Can't believe it's April already!!
Here are the latest arriving birds in the Waycross, Ware Co. area of
South Georgia. Both were noted today (4/1) from my backyard (suburb w/
drainage canal & adjacent woodlot near Satilla River):
CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW--1 heard calling twice at 8:22 p.m. It was, as we
say, "dark-thirty". A first for this backyard!! I was sitting at my
computer with the door open to listen for the nature sounds when this
unexpected call was heard. Always a welcome sound. I grew up in an old
Longleaf Pine forest on the outskirts of Waycross, and thus they
provided me with one of my earliest bird call memories. I remember
always wondering what these mysterious "night birds" looked like.
GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER--1 heard briefly during the day
Also, the BROWN THRASHERs, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDs, and NORTHERN CARDINALs
are singing up a storm and the GRAY CATBIRD is "meowing". A few
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs are still here.
Take care.
Sincerely,
Sheila Willis
